星条旗、The Stars and Stripesはアメリカ合衆国の国旗です。ニューヨークの街並みを散歩していると、この国旗を見かけることがよくあって、市民生活に溶け込んでいることがよくわかります。
星条旗のデザインは独立当初の13州を赤と白の横線で、左上の長方形の青地に白星で州の数を表現しています。
星条旗と密接に関連するのが国歌です。アメリカ合衆国の国歌を聞いたことがありますよね？大きなスポーツイベントの開会セレモニーなどで伴奏なしで朗々と歌われる合衆国国歌はいつ聞いても感動します。
アメリカ市民は、子どものころから実に様々な場面で国歌を歌います。そもそも学校では、毎朝「忠誠の誓い」とセットで歌いますから、身体に染み込んでいるといってよいでしょう。
外国人にとって、忠誠の誓いを発声する機会があるとしたら、市民権を得たのちのセレモニーで聖職者に続き、全員で唱和することではないでしょうか。
忠誠の誓い OATH OF ALLEGIANCE

長文ですし、あまり馴染みのない単語もありますね。むしろ子どもが毎朝学校で唱和する忠誠の誓いのほうが、もう少し短くて覚えやすいです。

文語調で訳してみました。悪くないな、と自画自賛です。
結構な臨場感のある歌詞で、知らない方は驚くかもしれません。薄暮の戦場で一閃、ロケット弾が炸裂する。しかしそこでなお我らが星条旗がはためいている。
国歌ってこういうものだよな、と思います。
